Sargassum is a genus of macroalgae that can grow several meters, they are brown or dark green. Some species have gas-filled vesicles to float and facilitate photosynthesis. Different species of sargassum are found in tropical areas of the world, especially near coral reefs.
The algae grow attached to the coral and the rocks, in other cases, huge populations of sargassum float adrift. Sargassum reproduces rapidly, doubling its volume in less than a month. "The brown tide" is when the sargassum is concentrated on the coast, endangering the local ecosystem.
